SUSTAINABILITY ON EDUCATION
In the Brundtland Report published in 1987 by the United Nations, sustainable development was firstly used and well defined as “the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (WCED, 1987, p.43). According to the report, there were two fundamental causes of problems that people were facing: extreme poverty and economic development. These two causes led people to compel the world’s resources to fulfill their needs and to utilize those resources unsustainably. To cope with the challenges that people have faced, sustainable development goals are targeted by all 193 Member States of the United Nations in September, in 2015 (UN, 2015). The goals focus on creating solutions for saving the planet, eradicating poverty and sustaining prosperity and peace for all the people around the world by 2030. The sustainable development goals are:
- Goal 1: No poverty
- Goal 2: Zero hunger
- Goal 3: Good health and well-being
- Goal 4: Quality education
- Goal 5: Gender equality
- Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation
- Goal 7: Affordable and clean energy
- Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth
- Goal 9: Industry, innovation, and infrastructure
- Goal 10: Reduced inequality
- Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities
- Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production
- Goal 13: Climate action
- Goal 14: Life below water
- Goal 15: Life on land
- Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions
- Goal 17: Partnerships to achieve the goal (UN, 2015).
All these goals address the difficulties and challenges of the global world. Each goal is classified under each pillar. The People pillar consists of Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; Planet includes Sustainable Development Goals 6, 12, 13, 14, 15; Prosperity represents Sustainable Development Goals 7, 8, 9, 10, 11; Partnership is formed of the Sustainable Development Goal 17; and lastly, Peace contains the Sustainable Development Goal 16.
The concept of Education for Sustainable Development Goals (ESDG) was declared in 1992 by UN during the Conference on Environment and Development (UNESCO, 2014). It was a declaration for all countries to implement and use education for the advancement of sustainable development. Education for Sustainable Development Goals takes a vital role in quality education by facilitating cognitive, social, emotional and behavioural aspects of education (Odell et al., 2020). Education for Sustainable Development Goals fosters critical thinking, and tries to make individuals active citizens (UNESCO, 2015). Hence, the aim of the Special Issue of the journal WAJES (Western Anatolian Journal of Educational Sciences ) co-edited by Prof. Dr. Feryal Cubukcu and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Krunoslav Mikulan is to tackle the relationship between sustainability in education, sustainable development goals in education, and the implementation of the related concepts on education.
